Who needs FTP sites anymore?
Date:
6 June 2011
For as long as I can remember we have been using FTP sites to share files with clients and colleagues but just recently I have come across some pretty cool alternatives which have lead me to question the need for FTP accounts at all. The services I have been using are Dropbox and YouSendIt.
Dropbox is a free app on the iphone, Mac and PC and appears to be some kind of clever peer-to-peer software that allows us to share files across devices and locations. Just drop the file into the dropbox from your computer and it is immediately available to everyone else using the dropbox.
You can also create sub folders within the dropbox which can be opened up to other users so you can share files with clients and suppliers. It is pretty cool technology so give it a try at www.dropbox.com
YouSendIt has been around for ages but in a mis-guided to want to control all processes I have always avoided it because the file is delivered 'by them' and not me. This, of course, is nonsense and in a new collaborative spirit it is now and excellent way to deliver large files by email. Once again, give them a try at www.yousendit.com or watch the video below on how it can help your business.
These are just two services which are making FTP look a very antiquated method of sharing stuff so maybe the answer is nobody needs FTP anymore.
